Three Polish shopping centres and a residential/services project in that country are among the European development schemes to be highlighted at Mipim this year. The shopping centre projects are the 40,000 m2 Serenada Shopping Centre in Krakow, which opens its doors in mid-2012; the 35,000 m2 Aleja Slonca mall in Szczecin, also due to open in mid-2012; and the extension of the Jantar Shopping Mall in Slupsk, scheduled to open at the end of 2011 to create a complete regional mall of 42,000 m2. All three projects were developed by Mayland.
The new residential/services project will be located on a site formerly occupied by the Huta Warszawa steelworks in Warsaw’s Bielany district. It will provide about 7,000 apartments and satisfy a considerable part of Warsaw’s residential needs, providing housing for 20,000 people over the next 15 years.
Poland is this year’s Guest of Honour at Mipim and a number of events and activities have been organised around the country, which was one of the few in Europe that did not go into recession in 2009. Polish exhibitors will be grouped in two display areas: one to promote the Euro 2012 football championships and the other to enhance local and regional investment potential.
‘In 2009 it was clear that the number of big new projects being unveiled at Mipim was relatively low as companies absorbed the effects of the economic situation,’ said Mipim director Nadine Castagna. ‘This year, there are signs of improved market confidence and ambitious real estate projects are back in Cannes.’
