Law firm Dentons has announced the opening of an office in Milan - its first in Italy - with the hiring of 21 lawyers, including seven partners.

The team will be led by managing partner Federico Sutti, who was formerly DLA Piper's managing director for Europe and Africa.

The new office will focus on real estate, energy and employment law.

'Italy ranks amongst the world's top 10 countries by GDP, and is the third largest economy in the eurozone. The launch of our Milan office marks another important milestone towards achieving our objective of becoming the world's leading law firm, capable of offering clients premium counsel in all of the places they do business,' commented Dentons' global chairman Joe Andrew.

'Italy is one of the key markets under our growth strategy for Europe,' added Tomasz D¹browski, CEO for Europe at Dentons.

The announcement follows Dentons' recently announced merger with US law firm McKenna Long & Aldridge as well as the announcement of the upcoming combination between Dentons and Dacheng, which will create the world's largest law firm.

Earlier this year Dentons also announced the appointment of eight partners along with 50 lawyers and other professionals in Budapest.
