Canadian developer Brookfield Property Partners has been given the green light by City of London planners to build the 36-storey 1 Leadenhall skyscraper in the capital's financial district.

The 182.7 metre tower, designed by Ken Shuttleworth's Make practice, will provide around 50,000 m2 of office space, plus ground, first and second floor retail and dining units. A public terrace has also been included in the plans.

Brookfield Property Partners, which is also building an office block at 100 Bishopsgate and has other projects slated in London, said it was 'delighted' about the planning consent. '1 Leadenhall is a carefully considered design that will complement the architecture of the surrounding building,' commented Martin Jepson, head of Brookfield's UK offices division.

A spokesperson for Brookfield also said that while there was no formal timetable for construction, it would probably not be delivered before the early 2020s. The current tenant of the building on the site, tech company Amazon, has another year on its lease before demoltion can commence.

1 Leadenhall joins a number of other new projects in the Square Mile, including 1 Undershaft, a 73-storey tower dubbed the Trellis, which will dwarf Brookfield's scheme at nearly 300 metres. AXA IM's 22 Bishopsgate development project also got the green light last year for a 62-storey office tower.
