Property lawyer Alastair Moss has been appointed chair of the City of London's planning and transportation committee, succeeding Chris Hayward, who becomes deputy chairman.

Moss, an independent member for the ward of Cheap, was first elected to the corporation six years ago. He was previously deputy chairman of the committee, helping to oversee major office developments, the implementation of 20mph limited traffic zones and a comprehensive transport and delivery strategy.

He has also served as chairman of the investment committee, been the corporation's lead member of Cheapside Business Alliance and a member of the City's Brexit task force.

Moss is a partner and co-head of real estate at Memery Crystal lawyers and has been practising property law for more than 20 years.

Speaking at the meeting where he was elected by members, Moss said: 'This committee is about the functioning of the city, which I believe is the greatest city in the world, and one where we need to encourage the right development and the right uses, and also have the best transportation possible in the world – making that balance between leading but also being predictable, transparent and being good people to deal with.'

Outgoing chairman Chris Hayward added: 'We’ve passed some very momentous decisions over the past three years. It’s been a privilege to be in the chair at that time in the cycle of this committee’s life.'
