Carpetright has confirmed it is planning major expansion in Europe, either through acquisitions or by direct openings of new stores. Lord Harris, the chairman of Europe's largest floor covering group, unveiled the strategy as he reported profits were up 17% to £26 mln (EUR 38.6 mln) for the first half of the year to October 28.
The company has 600 stories, most of which are in the UK and Ireland. Harris said there is scope to double the group's number of outlets in continental Europe to 200. Carpetright is active in Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland. Profits rose by 21.4% at these stores and Harris said he was particularly keen to expand in Poland where there are three outlets. 'We would like to have 100 stores in Poland if we could,' he is quoted as saying by Citywire news service.
