Canadian hotel developer Mercan Properties has invested €21 mln to open the first out of four planned hotels in Portugal’s Alentejo region.
The historic city of Évora is home to the Hilton Garden Inn Évora, which extends over an area of over 8,000 m2 and offers 130 rooms, an outdoor swimming pool on the terrace with a bar.
Modern amenities of the four star hotel include a restaurant, gym and meeting room with capacity for up to 50 people.
Hilton Garden Inn Évora is just a few minutes away from the historic center of the city of Évora, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Jordi Vilanova, president of Mercan Properties, said: ‘It is a remarkable investment for Mercan Properties, which thus inaugurates a new hotel in yet another historic city in Portugal, through an international brand of excellence: the Hilton Garden Inn – which perfectly illustrates the real benefits and the capacity that foreign investment presents to implement innovative projects, which present themselves as stimulators of economic and tourist dynamism. This new hotel unit stems from the Residence Permits for Investment regime, thus demonstrating the potential of this type of regime for the effective creation of wealth, tourist attractiveness and employment.’
Mercan Properties is building another three star hotel in Evora, which is already in the advanced construction phase and set for opening in Q2 2024.
The €6.8 mln Holiday Inn Express Evora, operating under the IHG brand, will offer 76 rooms, an outdoor pool, restaurant, bar, and meeting room.
It is located in the Portas de Avis area, the historic center zone surrounded by the city’s wall.
Overall, the hotel developer is investing around €37.8 mln in the four hotel projects in the Alentejo region.
Mercan Group has 27 hotel projects in Portugal in attractive locations such as Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, Matosinhos, Lisbon, Amarante, Algarve, and Évora.
