Stephen Hester, CEO of British Land, is to assume the position of non-executive director at the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) from October 1. At the same time, he will relinquish his role as non-executive deputy chairman of embattled British bank Northern Rock after just seven months in the job.

Commenting on the appointment, Chris Gibson-Smith, chairman of British Land said: 'Stephen's appointment reflects well on our Chief Executive and the perspective gained will be of relevance to his role at British Land given the influence of the financial markets on real estate.'
Hester was appointed by Rock chairman Ron Sandler to help with the process of bringing the bank into public ownership following its collapse.
