As Spain experiences its worst real estate crisis in decades, the organisers of the Barcelona Meeting Point (BMPSA) property fair are mulling the launch of a fair in Brazil next year. 'We have to put more focus on the international side of our business and I can announce that chances are that we will be launching a Brazilian Meeting Point in Sao Paulo next year,' BMPSA managing director Josep Pons has said.
Speaking with PropertyEU's Web TV unit at Barcelona Meeting Point, Pons said the Brazilian fair may be held at the end of June or September in 2009. The move is a result of the strong interest shown by Latin American companies at this year's edition of BMPSA. He added that an event in the United Arab Emirates is also on the cards. 'But the Dubai event would be something for 2010, not for next year,' he added.
In Spain, BMPSA will have to ‘think a lot about how to restructure'. The number of exhibitors at this year's edition of BMPSA in Barcelona has fallen by one third, Pons said.
The crisis in the Spanish market is expected to continue through next year, further impacting on the number of exhibitors at the Barcelona fair.
'The first success of this year is to have the show running, everybody knows that real estate is in trouble in Spain, especially the residential sector. For us and for many others the very first success of this year is simply having the show.'
