German discount retailer Aldi is to open a food store in the £150 mln scheme being developed by UK regeneration specialist St Modwen in Wolverhampton in the British West Midlands. Aldi has signed an agreement to lease 1,600 m2 of space in the scheme.

St Modwen acquired the 33-hectare site for the project from car tire maker Goodyear in 2002. Over a five-year period the site will be redeveloped into a urban community of 600 homes, retail accommodation, a new park with sports facilities and a school.

Building works are expected to start on the new Aldi store in the summer next year with a view to opening at the end of 2009.

Peter Rudd, development manager at St Modwen said: 'The signing up of Aldi will trigger yet more activity on site, allowing us to build out the access road to the planned retail and residential areas which in turn, will start opening up the scheme to this area of Wolverhampton.'
