Dutch retail group Ahold plans to sell its operations in Poland to France's Carrefour in a deal valued at EUR 35 mln. Ahold currently operates 179 supermarkets under the 'Albert' brand, four Hypernova hypermarkets and four gas stations in Poland. It employs about 10,000 people.

Ahold, which was hit by an accounting scandal in 2003, said the sale is part of the strategic review plans announced by Ahold last month. Its U.S. Foodservice subsidiary, a key component in the scandal, is being sold off alongside the divestments in Poland and Slovakia. In addition, Ahold is selling its 49% stake in Portugal's Jeronimo Martins.

Analysts have estimated the entire operation could raise between EUR 4.5 bn and EUR 5.5 bn for Ahold.
