Ten European cities feature in CBRE's 2013 ranking of markets with the highest level of new retail entrants.

Mature markets dominated retailers’ expansion plans last year although five emerging markets made the top 20, according to the 6th edition of CBRE's 'How Global is the Business of Retail?'

Kiev takes second place after Hong Kong with 39 new entrants, the second time the Ukrainian capital has been ranked in the top 3 globally.

A combination of strong growth in real incomes and a serious under-supply of quality retail space in the city is driving major shopping centre development, which in turn is attracting a wide range of retailers including Prada, Camper and S. Oliver, CBRE said.

Berlin is in third position in terms of new entrants (28) with Frankfurt in 10th place (20 new entrants), and 12th palce shared by Hamburg (19) and Munich (19), alongside Lasi and Warsaw.

CBRE said low unemployment, rising wages and employment levels at record highs have created strong fundamentals for consumption in Germany and are encouraging retailers to target a wide range of cities. Notable new entries in Berlin include Mulberry, Hollister, Pull & Bear, and Zara Home (which also entered Munich).

Paris and London are ranked 7th and 9th respectively. Moscow and Lyon share 17th position with New Delhi and Toronto.

Moscow shares 4th place in the world together with New York in terms of retailer representation, according to CBRE.
