Spanish utility Iberdrola has acquired what it describes as the world’s largest onshore wind farm in Australia.

The firm’s Australian subsidiary, Iberdrola Australia, has invested an undisclosed amount to buy the 1GW Mount James wind farm in North Queensland, sitting across more than 50,000 hectares.

Iberdrola said it has a portfolio of more than 3GW in Australia following the acquisition.

Iberdrola group has become a leader in the Australian renewable energy market following its acquisition in 2020 of Infigen Energy, now Iberdrola Australia, a vertically-integrated renewable energy company with 940MW of installed capacity.

Among the Spanish company’s biggest projects in Australia is the 317MW Port Augusta wind-solar complex, which is in the process of being commissioned in South Australia.
