Existing GLIL Infrastructure investors, including LPPI, West Yorkshire Pension Fund, Merseyside Pension Fund and Greater Manchester Pension Fund have committed a further £400m (€467.6m) to boost the UK infrastructure investment fund’s total capital to £4.5bn.
Established in 2015 with £500m, GLIL was created to give UK pension funds a direct, collaborative vehicle for long-term investment in essential domestic infrastructure.
GLIL’s recent investments include the acquisition of a majority interest in a hyperscale data centre campus in South East England from Yondr, complementing its existing investment in the UK’s largest mobile tower company, Cornerstone. GLIL also recently acquired a minority stake in the wellboat operator Sølvtrans.
Jonathan Ord, head of direct infrastructure at GLIL, said: “Our ability to collaborate is what sets us apart. We uniquely combine pension funds’ resources and expertise to create real scale, and connect with other partners to help them efficiently invest directly in UK infrastructure. Our first decade has shown the strength of our approach, and we’re excited to use this additional capital to keep building on this, as we have done through our recent investments in digital infrastructure and transport infrastructure.
“Our pipeline will remain broad, but with a particular focus on the energy transition and digitalisation – areas where the UK needs significant investment – and we’ll be exploring ways we can start to take on additional construction risk, applying the operational experience we’ve built within our team.”
