Hong Kong-based Gaw Capital Partners has set up a joint venture to grow its internet data centre investments in Asia outside of China.
The Data Center First joint venture, which targets Indonesia has agreed its first project will be located in the Nongsa Digital Park in Batam.
Kenneth Gaw, president and managing principal of Gaw Capital Partners, said the venture signalled “a key milestone” in his firm’s growth in the data centre industry, now a key focus sector for Gaw Capital.
Gaw said: “We plan to grow our regional data centre platform rapidly through a combination of multiple asset and platform acquisitions. Our partnership with Data Center First is the first step in the execution of this strategy.”
Last September, the real estate private equity firm raised US$1.3bn (€1.1bn) for its first internet data centre platform to build data centre clusters with Chinese developers in China.
Data Center First has been set up with Wong Ka Vin as the co-founder and CEO. An industry veteran, Wong has previously worked with global players such as Equinix Asia Pacific, and has led the development of important data infrastructure in Singapore.
