Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) is investing in Nivalan Biokaasu, a project expected to become Finland’s largest industrial biogas plant.

CIP said it has made a final investment decision on the Nivalan Biokaasu project, without disclosing financial details.

The fund manager is investing through CI Advanced Bioenergy Fund I, marking the bioenergy infrastructure fund’s first investment outside of Denmark.

Development of the plant began in 2023 in partnership with local developer Wega and local authorities. Construction is scheduled to start in late 2025, with operations expected to begin in the second half of 2027.

Once fully operational, the Nivalan Biokaasu plant will process more than 600,000 tons of agricultural and industrial organic waste annually, converting it into biomethane.

Thomas Dalsgaard, partner at CIP, said: “We are excited to enter the Finnish bioenergy market with our first investment in Nivalan Biokaasu. It represents a major milestone for our fund and investors and will make a significant contribution to energy security and the green energy transition, create local jobs and drive investments across the agricultural sector and surrounding rural communities.

“We look forward to starting construction and progressing the project in close collaboration with local farmers and authorities.”
