California State Teachers Retirement System’s (CalSTRS) $38bn (€32bn) real estate portfolio recorded a 7.4% net return over the 12 months to 30 June 2021 compared with its benchmark’s 1.59% return.

The $308.6bn pension fund said its real estate portfolio performance during the fiscal 2021 year-end outpaced the NCREIF ODCE Value Weighted Index during the same period.

Over a three year period, CalSTRS recorded a 7.3% net return for the real estate portfolio and an 8.1% and 9.6% return for the five and ten years respectively.

CalSTRS has a strategy of investing in all of the risk sectors in real estate of core, value-add and opportunistic via collaborative strategies and some commitments to funds.

CalSTRS currently ranks tenth on the IPE Real Assets Top 100 real estate investors rankings.
