Actis is buying 11 data centres in the Americas from Nabiax, a data centre operator owned by Asterion Industrial Partners and Telefonica.
The global sustainable infrastructure investor Actis has agreed to acquire the 23MW portfolio of assets located in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru and Argentina, with a small exposure in Florida in the US.
IPE Real Assets understands that Actis is paying around $400m (€370m) for the assets which complement the investor’s five data centre platforms in Asia and Africa.
The assets were originally built by Telefónica for both its own operations and for its clients, and the company remains an anchor tenant under a long-term contract.
Nabiax was created after Asterion acquired 11 data centres from Telefónica for €550m in 2019. Last year, Telefónica agreed to take a 20% stake in Nabiax by contributing four data centres to the platform.
Asterion will continue to own, operate and grow the European assets, while Actis will be the new owner of the data centres in the Americas.
Mauricio Giusti, partner at Actis in its Sao Paulo office, said: “We are delighted to deepen our footprint in the digital infrastructure sector with the acquisition of these anchor assets for our pan-Latam data centre platform.
“We are also excited to partner with Telefónica in the region as a key customer of the platform, while also positioning the data centres as carrier-neutral facilities. Data centres are crucial in connecting communities, enabling economic growth, and in providing access to information and education.”
Adrian Mucalov, partner at Actis and head of long-life infrastructure, said Actis will “leverage its expertise in the energy sector to drive energy efficiencies” and to increase the use of renewable energy powering the data centres.
“Investing into an established, resilient business with a strong long-term position fits well with our strategy,” Mucalov added.
The deal is the seventh investment Actis has made in digital infrastructure, with over $1bn currently committed in the sector.
